Tasting Notes

Nose

Citrus and coriander first — building toward juniper, pine bark, then mentholated notes rushing in, warm cocoa-like aroma, velvety

Palate

Warm and velvety — super-sweet cocoa-like flavour from the mate, eucalyptus and peperina providing intense menthol, the young undried mate's floral quality distinct from bitter dried tea, red grapefruit adding citrus brightness

Finish

Eucalyptus and peppermint — heavy and lingering, the Andean peperina's essential oils persisting, warming and intensely aromatic, unmistakably Argentine

Principe de los Apostoles brings Argentine mate culture to gin-making with brilliant results. At 40.5% the London Dry base is infused with a grassy, vegetal mate character that's utterly captivating.

Using yerba mate in a London Dry gin is inspired. At 40.5% the herbal, slightly bitter mate character adds a fascinating dimension. Pairs brilliantly with grapefruit tonic.

I can respect the innovation of using yerba mate, but the resulting green, vegetal flavour at 40.5% is too far from traditional gin territory for me. The herbal bitterness overwhelms the juniper.
