First Impressions
Bathtub Sloe Gin Explorer's Edition uses the compound gin method — up to half a pound of sloes go into every bottle, along with juniper berries, cassia, coriander and orange peel. The higher proof point prevents cloying sweetness, and the almond extract provides balanced sweetness.
Tasting
The nose shows almond and marzipan with aromatic juniper and rich berry depth. On the palate, plum-like and berry-rich without saccharine notes — balanced bitterness and sweetness from almond, black forest fruit with juniper warmth. The finish is quite dry and slightly sour, puckering the mouth.
The Bottom Line
Bathtub Sloe Explorer's earns a 7 for the compound gin method applied to sloe — the result is drier and more complex than mainstream sloe gins. The half-pound of sloes per bottle ensures genuine fruit character. Premium priced but distinct.
