First Impressions
Bedrock Gin has been distilled in Keswick in the Lake District since 2008 by Spirit of the Lakes. The name references the ancient Lakeland geology beneath the distillery, and the gin draws on its surroundings: spring water from the western Lake District, and kiln-dried oak bark sourced locally. That oak bark is the signature — an uncommon gin botanical that contributes a smooth, mellow woodiness to the finish without pushing the gin towards a barrel-aged character.
Tasting
Traditional London Dry botanicals — juniper, coriander, lemon and orange peel, angelica root, liquorice, cinnamon — plus the locally sourced kiln-dried oak bark. The nose is clean and classic: juniper forward with black pepper, cinnamon spice, and coriander. On the palate, classic juniper-forward London Dry character with assertive black pepper spice smoothed by liquorice. The oak bark adds subtle mellow woodiness without dominating. The finish is where Bedrock distinguishes itself — smooth and mellow, the oak's contribution providing a rounded close. IWSC Gold medal.
The Bottom Line
Bedrock earns a 7 — a London Dry that uses its Lake District provenance to genuine effect. The kiln-dried oak bark is a clever addition: enough to create distinction and smoothness without pushing the gin into barrel-aged territory. The IWSC Gold confirms what the palate reveals — this is a well-made classic gin. Best in a G&T or a Martini where the smooth, peppery character shines. At £32, excellent value for an award-winning Lake District gin.
