First Impressions

Hayman's English Cordial Gin replicates a style of gin enjoyed in the 1800s — the 'Cordial Gin' that predated both London Dry and Old Tom. In that era, sweetness was added to mask the relatively poor quality of base distillate. Hayman's version reverses the logic: they add subtle sweetness to their excellent ten-botanical London Dry base, and the result is not a mask but an amplifier. Released in limited batches of 1,500 bottles, it represents one of gin's most interesting historical revivals.

The Distillery

Hayman Distillers uses their signature ten-botanical recipe — juniper, coriander seed, nutmeg, cinnamon, angelica root, orris root, cassia bark, liquorice, orange and lemon peel — with the addition of sweetening to create the cordial style. The ten botanicals are those used in Hayman's London Dry, providing a foundation of established quality.

Tasting

The nose is piney juniper and spice — the ten-botanical Hayman's character immediately recognisable. Liquorice, zesty citrus, and nutty angelica add depth. It is clean and classic.

On the palate, the sweetness is immediately apparent but expertly calibrated. It amplifies the classic London Dry flavours rather than masking them — the juniper is more vivid, the citrus more juicy, the spice more aromatic. Dry piney juniper and spice balance the sweetness, creating a drinking experience that is richer and more approachable than the standard London Dry.

The finish is long and classic, smoothed by the subtle sweetness. The gin character persists throughout.

How to Drink It

In a Tom Collins — the cordial style is the original base for this classic cocktail. Also excellent in an Old Fashioned-style serve or a Martinez.

The Bottom Line

Hayman's Cordial Gin earns a 7.5 for reviving an 1800s style with intelligence and quality. The sweetness amplifies rather than obscures, and the ten-botanical Hayman's base ensures genuine gin character. The limited 1,500-bottle batches add collectible value. At around £30, a taste of gin history made by one of London's most trusted distillers.
