First Impressions
Mataroa uses twelve Greek botanicals including genuine mastic from Chios island — a resin that adds subtle freshness found in no other gin. Produced at a long-running family distillery in Greece. The pronounced piney juniper satisfies traditionalists while Mediterranean botanicals add Greek identity.
Tasting
The nose is bold oily juniper with liquorice, citrus and developing mint-peppercorn. On the palate, piney juniper with herbal depth — subtle mastic freshness, aniseed-mint, nutmeg-cinnamon warmth. The finish is clean and cleansing with lingering bay leaf and mastic.
The Bottom Line
Mataroa earns a 7 for the first genuinely Greek gin in our collection — the Chios mastic adds a botanical dimension found nowhere else in the gin world. The pronounced juniper will satisfy London Dry purists while the Mediterranean herbs tell a distinctly Greek story. Works brilliantly in both Martinis and Brambles.
