Nikka Coffey Gin: Japanese Citrus Mastery From a Whisky Legend
Contemporary 47% ABV ABV Nikka Whisky Distilling Co.Citrus perfection from Japan
Nikka's whisky expertise translates beautifully to gin. The rich, oily texture from the Coffey still is gorgeous, and the layered Japanese citrus — yuzu, amanatsu, kabosu — creates something no Western gin can match.
Citrus overload for me
Yuzu, kabosu, amanatsu, shequasar — it's a lot of citrus. At 47% ABV there's great body and the oily mouthfeel is distinctive, but I find the relentless citrus layers a bit tiring. The sansho pepper is a nice touch but gets lost. Well-made but quite one-note for me.
Perfection from Nikka
This is what happens when one of Japan's greatest whisky makers turns their hand to gin. The rich, oily Coffey still texture with layer upon layer of citrus — yuzu, amanatsu, shequasar — is breathtaking. At 47%, the sansho pepper warmth and grainy sweetness create an unforgettable finish. Absolute perfection.
Japanese citrus showcase
The way this layers yuzu, kabosu, and amanatsu with apple sweetness is masterful. Orange peel and lemon peel round things out, while the angelica provides earthiness. At 47% it's got serious presence.
A gin lover's gin
The long, citrus-driven finish with sansho pepper warmth and soft grainy sweetness is magnificent. Every element is in perfect balance. Nikka have brought whisky-level seriousness to gin making and it shows.
Exceptional mouthfeel
The Coffey still gives this a texture unlike any other gin. At 47% it's rich and oily with those incredible layers of Japanese citrus. The apple sweetness and soft grainy quality on the finish are beautiful.
Whisky maker's gin
You can taste Nikka's distilling heritage in every sip. The clean, grainy quality from the Coffey still underpins everything. Coriander spice and sansho pepper add complexity beyond the citrus. Excellent Contemporary gin.
