First Impressions
Puerto de Indias — named for the port from which ships sailed to the Americas — is crafted at the Los Alcores de Carmona distillery, one of Seville's oldest, founded in 1880. The Pure Black Edition is their premium expression: a striking black bottle concealing a gin built around Seville's most famous aromatics — jasmine, orange blossom, and citrus. Distilled in copper stills from a molasses spirit base.
Tasting
Botanicals include juniper, orange blossom, lemon, vanilla, and jasmine. The nose is very floral — orange blossom, jasmine, and lemon in abundance. On the palate at 40%, smooth and complex: citrus and juniper balanced by floral undertones, jasmine adding exotic depth, vanilla providing slight sweetness. The finish is clean and refreshing with lingering citrus and a touch of spice. Rated 86/100 — 'far better than average for those who enjoy a more modern take on gin'.
The Bottom Line
Puerto de Indias Pure Black earns a 7 — a Sevillian gin that captures the city's fragrant character without descending into perfume. The orange blossom and jasmine are authentic Andalusian botanicals, not imported flavourings. Best in a Spanish-style copa with plenty of ice, Mediterranean tonic, and an orange twist. At £32, genuine Seville heritage from a distillery with nearly 150 years of experience.
