First Impressions
Whitley Neill Original is the gin that launched one of the UK's most successful craft gin brands. Johnny Neill — eighth generation of the famous gin-distilling family — created it as a tribute to his English distilling heritage and a homage to his wife's African homeland. The signature botanicals — baobab fruit (from the Tree of Life) and Cape gooseberries from South Africa — give it a personality distinct from any other London Dry.
Tasting
The nose is fresh and balanced with citrus and floral notes — both citrus-sweet and peppery with a distinctive floral aroma from the African botanicals. On the palate, the gin is soft and rich with spices and citrus — notably smoother than traditional London Drys, with rich juniper and the baobab adding body. The finish is long and subtle, with herbs, cocoa, and candied lemon peels fading gently.
The Bottom Line
Whitley Neill Original earns a 7.5 for creating a London Dry with genuine African botanical distinction. The baobab and Cape gooseberry add smoothness and complexity that standard London Drys lack, and the 43% ABV gives proper authority. At around £22, one of the best-value quality gins available. The original that launched an empire.
