Tasting Notes

Nose

Ocean waves — salt water, oysters, seaweed, the Rioja barrel adding floral spice and orange-Madeira sweetness, rose gold in the glass

Palate

Remarkably soft despite 57% — seaweed brine with subtle sweetness, burst of lemon citrus, warming peppered heat, blackberry and liquorice from the Rioja barrel, candied peel, rich comforting orange

Finish

Rich orange warmth — the Rioja barrel's contribution lingering, seaweed salt persisting, the Armada strength carrying every flavour with authority, long and contemplative

Expert Review

9/10

Ireland's first navy strength gin — five Donegal seaweeds aged in Rioja barrels at 57%. Named for La Duquesa Santa Ana, a Spanish Armada ship lost off Loughros Mor in 1588. Rose gold hue from the Rioja casks. Sweet blackberry, liquorice, and orange from the barrel meeting ocean salt and umami seaweed.
