Tasting Notes

Nose

Soft juniper with herbal notes — recognisable rosemary, lavender and honey, Portuguese lemon brightness, gum rockrose (cistus ladanifer) adding a resinous quality unique to this gin

Palate

Soft and dry with spice transforming into resinous lemon — fresh citrus from the oversized Portuguese lemons, rosemary warmth, cistus ladanifer providing an aromatic resinous character like walking through Mediterranean scrubland, grapefruit and juniper in harmonious blend

Finish

Clean and composed — Portuguese lemon lingering with rosemary and lavender, the cistus providing a distinctive long aromatic tail, moderate warmth, a feeling of saudade in a glass

Created by Stephan Garbe, a Hamburg advertising man who fell in love with Portugal while walking the 75km Trilho dos Pescadores fishing trail on the Costa Vicentina. He noticed juniper, rockrose and enormous lemons growing along the wild coast and wanted to capture the Portuguese feeling of saudade — that insatiable longing — in a gin. Unable to navigate Portuguese planning permission, he founded the Altonaer Spirituosen Manufaktur in Hamburg's Altona district. Fourteen botanicals sourced exclusively from Portugal, distilled in a 100-litre Arnold Holstein copper still.
