First Impressions
Caorunn Highland Strength takes the same five foraged Celtic botanicals — dandelion, heather, coul blush apple, bog myrtle, and rowan berry — processed through the same unique Copper Berry Chamber at Balmenach Distillery, and bottles the result at a commanding 54% ABV. The additional strength transforms the drinking experience: botanicals that whisper at 41.8% shout at 54%, and the result earned a Double Gold at the International Spirits Challenge.
The Distillery
Balmenach Distillery in Speyside uses the same Copper Berry Chamber — the world's only working example, originally built in the 1920s — to produce Highland Strength alongside the standard expression. The higher bottling strength means the botanical oils are carried with greater intensity.
Tasting
The nose presents intense juniper and spiciness, followed by pepper, mint, and citrus. It is surprisingly fruit-heavy — sweet orange and grapefruit drop first before a gentle juniper hit. At 54%, the aromatics are amplified significantly over the standard expression.
On the palate, the gin is light yet intense, with concentrated flavours where the spice seems spicier, the pepper more peppery, and the lemon/orange citrus like biting into bits of fresh peel. There is pleasant medium weight with oregano, thyme, and bitter herbs. The Highland botanicals — heather, bog myrtle, coul blush apple — express themselves more vividly at this strength.
The finish features a luxurious mouthfeel and peppery lingering. The Highland Strength departs from the standard with more bite and less vanilla sweetness — the higher proof pushing the botanicals harder.
How to Drink It
In a G&T — the 54% strength ensures the botanicals carry through generous tonic. In a Negroni where the Highland spice creates magnificent depth. Neat over a single ice cube for contemplative Highland drinking.
The Bottom Line
Caorunn Highland Strength earns an 8 for amplifying an already excellent Scottish gin to Double Gold-winning intensity. The 54% ABV transforms the Copper Berry Chamber botanicals — everything is more vivid, more intense, and more engaging. At around £35, the Double Gold credentials and the full navy-strength power represent excellent value. The Highlands at full volume.
