First Impressions
Chase Distillery in Herefordshire is one of Britain's few true field-to-bottle operations: the same farm grows the potatoes for their base spirit and the Bramley apples for this gin. Fresh-pressed rhubarb and Bramley apple juice are blended with Chase GB Gin to create a fruit gin where the freshness of the juice is immediately apparent. Bronze at the 2020 IWSC.
Tasting
Fresh-pressed rhubarb and Bramley apple with gin botanicals. The nose is rhubarb crumble with cinnamon. On the palate at 40%, tangy rhubarb and Bramley apple tartness with juniper structure and cinnamon warmth. The finish is juniper, tart rhubarb, and cinnamon.
The Bottom Line
Chase Rhubarb & Bramley Apple earns a 7 — the field-to-bottle provenance and fresh-pressed juice create a fruit gin of genuine quality. The tartness of both rhubarb and Bramley apple prevents sweetness from dominating. Best in a G&T with elderflower tonic. At £28, Herefordshire's orchard in a glass.
