First Impressions
In 1565, Mary Queen of Scots first spied her future husband Lord Darnley at Wemyss Castle in Fife. That moment — love at first sight — gives this gin its name. The Wemyss (pronounced 'weems') family still lives in Fife, and their gin is produced at Kingsbarns Distillery in the East Neuk. Just six botanicals: juniper, lemon peel, elderflower, coriander, angelica root, and orris root. The modesty of the recipe is the point.
Tasting
Six botanicals. The nose is juniper-led with warm white pepper, strong coriander, and good lemon notes. On the palate at 40%, classic London Dry initially — then as the citrus falls away, elderflower emerges, followed by warm ginger. Rounded and creamy with angelica and lemon. A burst of spicy coriander appears after a moment. The finish is creamy, round, smooth, and warm. The elderflower is perfectly balanced: just strong enough to be floral, never overpowering.
The Bottom Line
Darnley's Original earns a 7 — a gin where six botanicals achieve more than many manage with sixteen. The elderflower is the distinguishing feature: it provides a floral lift that separates this from standard London Drys without pushing it into flavoured territory. The royal romance adds charm. Best in a G&T with a twist of lemon and a few elderflower sprigs if you can find them. At £30, excellent value for a gin with a 460-year love story.
