First Impressions
Edinburgh Gin Elderflower & Gooseberry pairs British gooseberries — affectionately known as goosegogs — with elderflower, one of gin's most ubiquitous floral botanicals. Both are added by post-distillation infusion to the classic Edinburgh gin base, bottled at a full 40%.
Tasting
The nose is breathy with elderflower, heather, juniper and angelica. On the palate, powdery elderflower dominates early with a citrus-like lemon peel impression. Green juniper sits in the background with coriander and orris emerging, while gooseberry adds plum-like fruit and citrus throughout. The finish sees elderflower and gooseberry citrus linger with the gin base preventing it from becoming merely floral.
The Bottom Line
Edinburgh Elderflower & Gooseberry earns a 7 for being among the better elderflower gins available. The gooseberry provides tartness that cuts through the elderflower's sweetness, and the gin notes remain present throughout. Best in a gin and soda or gin and lemonade where the delicate flavours have room to breathe.
