Gordon's London Dry Gin — The World's Bestseller, Assessed Without Sentiment
London Dry 37.5% ABV ABV Alexander Gordon / DiageoDoes exactly what it says
No pretension, no gimmicks — just honest London Dry gin. The orris root and angelica provide that classic earthy backbone. At this price point, Gordon's remains the benchmark.
Nostalgia in a glass
Gordon's has been making gin since 1769 for a reason. The balance of juniper, coriander, and liquorice root is timeless. Yes, I wish they'd kept it at 40%, but the recipe is still superb. A London Dry icon.
Best budget London Dry
For the price, you genuinely cannot beat Gordon's. The juniper-forward profile with coriander warmth makes it a reliable G&T base. The short, clean finish is actually quite refreshing.
The classic for a reason
Yes, it's been reduced to 37.5%, but the botanical recipe still works. Juniper, coriander, angelica, liquorice, and orris root — it's a proper London Dry template. Excellent value for money.
Reliable but unremarkable
Gordon's is always there when you need it. The coriander and angelica provide decent structure, and the juniper is present if a bit lean at 37.5%. A solid mixer that won't offend anyone but won't excite either.
A shadow of its former self
At 37.5% this feels thin and washed out. The juniper is recognisable but pale, and the liquorice and orris root barely register. Gordon's used to be a proper London Dry at 40% — this reduced-strength version is a disappointment. It does the job in a G&T but little more.
The benchmark London Dry
Every gin owes something to Gordon's. The clean juniper profile with coriander, angelica, and liquorice root defined what London Dry means. At any price this would be excellent — at Gordon's price it's extraordinary. My desert island gin, no question.
