First Impressions
G&J Greenall has been distilling in Warrington since 1761 — Britain's oldest distilling company. Master Distiller Joanne Moore uses the same London Dry method that has been used at the distillery for over 260 years, with eight botanicals: juniper, lemon peel, coriander, angelica, orris, cassia bark, liquorice, and bitter almonds. This is a gin with a longer continuous production history than almost any other.
Tasting
Eight botanicals. The nose is classic and fresh — juniper and citrus. On the palate at 40%, soft juniper with citrus zest brightness, mild liquorice, angelica earthiness, and cassia warmth. Smooth and crisp. The finish is well-rounded with citrus and earthy spice.
The Bottom Line
Greenall's earns a 7 — the consistency of 263 years of continuous production is its own recommendation. This is not a gin that tries to be exceptional; it is a gin that has been reliably good since before America was independent. Best in a G&T where its crisp, smooth character shines. At £19, extraordinary value from Britain's oldest distillery.
