First Impressions
McQueen Sweet Citrus was one of four 'world first' botanical gins launched in June 2016 by Vicky and Dale McQueen at their Trossachs Distillery in Callander. An important distinction: these are not flavoured gins. All flavours come from the distillation process — botanicals macerated overnight in hot spirit before the still is switched on.
Tasting
The nose is bright citrus with vanilla sweetness lifting the notes. On the palate at 42%, citrus-forward with vanilla undertones making the citrus taste sweeter and more prominent. Juniper provides backbone. The overnight maceration extracts maximum flavour. The finish is clean citrus with vanilla warmth.
The Bottom Line
McQueen Sweet Citrus earns a 6 — a competent citrus gin where the vanilla trick works nicely, making the citrus pop without added sweetener. At £15, this is extraordinary value for a Scottish craft gin — one of the best sub-£15 gins available. Best with elderflower tonic or in a simple G&T. A Trossachs gin that delivers far beyond its price point.
