First Impressions
Opihr is named for the biblical land of great riches — hand-picked botanicals from Indonesia (cubeb), Tanzania (cardamom), India (Tellicherry pepper) and Morocco (coriander). Made at Greenall's, it is a London Dry with the spice dial turned to maximum. Polarising by design.
Tasting
The nose is intense with cardamom and ginger, toasted cumin and curry powder. On the palate, dry coriander-cardamom, then juniper, then peppery heat from cubeb and black pepper — a spice market in a glass. The finish is soft camphor with Oriental warmth.
The Bottom Line
Opihr earns a 7 for the boldest spice-forward gin on the market. It will overwhelm those who want gentle florals, but for spice lovers it is extraordinary. The cumin and cubeb create a flavour reminiscent of a Middle Eastern souk. Best with tonic and a slice of orange to let the spices breathe.
