First Impressions
Whitby Real Rhubarb uses 100% Yorkshire forced rhubarb — a centuries-old technique where rhubarb is deprived of sunlight for extra sweetness and colour. The rhubarb is handpicked by candlelight at Robert Tomlinson's farm, and made into syrup before being added to Whitby's coastal gin base. Zero artificial flavours, colours or additives — the naturally radiant pink comes entirely from the rhubarb.
Tasting
The nose delivers delicate floral notes meeting soft fruity sweetness — rhubarb crumble, zesty lemon peel and coastal freshness. On the palate, bright and tangy with the unmistakable sharp-sweetness of Yorkshire forced rhubarb, softened by botanical juniper with gentle warmth lifted by subtle coastal botanicals. The finish is clean rhubarb tang with juniper warmth.
The Bottom Line
Whitby Real Rhubarb earns a 7 for genuine provenance in a category awash with artificial rhubarb flavouring. The forced Yorkshire rhubarb adds real fruit character, and the coastal botanical base prevents it from becoming mere fruit cordial. At 42% and naturally pink, this is rhubarb gin done properly.
