First Impressions
Basalt Distillery sits a stone's throw from the Giant's Causeway — Northern Ireland's most iconic geological formation, where 40,000 interlocking basalt columns rise from the sea. The distillery's water is drawn from a 600-foot borehole through this volcanic rock, filtered by 60 million years of geology. The name is not metaphorical; the gin is literally made from water that has passed through the ancient volcanic basalt columns.
Tasting
Local botanicals include kombu royale seaweed and sea buckthorn berries, adding savoury depth to a base of juniper, cassia, ginger, buckwheat, tail pepper, and citrus peel. The nose is very fresh citrus followed by juniper with hints of savoury saltiness. On the palate at 42.1%, fresh citrus and classic juniper meet sharp warm cassia and ginger spices, mellowed by buckwheat's gentle nuttiness. Kombu seaweed adds umami depth, sea buckthorn provides tart brightness. The finish is peppery from the tail pepper — long-lasting and savoury.
The Bottom Line
Basalt earns a 7 — a gin rooted in geology as much as botany. The 600-foot borehole water is not marketing — it produces a spirit with genuine mineral quality. Kombu seaweed and sea buckthorn create a savoury-tart dimension that pairs beautifully with the warm spices. Best in a G&T with light tonic and a twist of grapefruit, or in a Martini where the mineral water quality and umami depth create something special. At £34, a taste of the Causeway Coast.
