First Impressions
In 1866, the Larios family began distilling in Málaga, on Spain's Mediterranean coast. In 1932, the third Marquis of Larios launched the gin that would become Spain's and continental Europe's best-seller — one of the top ten gins sold globally. Pernod Ricard acquired it in 1997; Beam Suntory took ownership in 2005. Larios 12, launched in 2009, is the premium expression: twelve botanicals from across the Mediterranean, five times distilled for smoothness. The citrus bill reads like a Mediterranean fruit market: lemons, oranges, Haitian bitter oranges, mandarins, grapefruit, lime and orange blossom.
Tasting
Twelve botanicals five times distilled. The nose is bright orange blossom and coriander — very inviting and contemporary. On the palate, a melange of citrus: tangelo, orange, and Mineola mandarin creating layers, then mid-palate juniper and warm Pfeffernüsse cookie spice arrive. Classic botanicals — nutmeg, angelica, coriander — play supporting roles to the citrus stars. The five distillations produce remarkable smoothness. The finish is grapefruit rind with mild warmth, clean and accessible.
The Bottom Line
Larios 12 earns a 7 for doing what a Mediterranean gin should do: taste of sun, citrus and warmth. Spain's number one brand did not achieve its position by accident; the 12 botanical formula hits every citrus note without becoming monotonous, and the five distillations ensure smoothness that cheaper competitors lack. At around £20, this is one of the best-value premium gins available. The Marquis of Larios started something in Málaga 160 years ago; Larios 12 is its finest expression yet.
