First Impressions
Manchester Gin's master distillers Seb Heeley and Jen Wiggins worked with Peter Hook — bassist of Joy Division and New Order, and co-owner of the legendary Haçienda nightclub — to create a gin with Haçienda spirit. The lemon and lime peel are a deliberate nod to the acid house movement; the dandelion and burdock root reference Manchester's iconic soft drink. The bottle's Haçienda-coloured label distorts through the liquid — reminiscent of the club's raves.
Tasting
Lemon and lime peel, dandelion root, burdock root, juniper, coriander, orange peel, and liquorice. The nose is coriander and orange with bright juniper. On the palate at 42%, bold lemon and lime zest — vibrant and sherbety — with dandelion and burdock providing earthy Manchester sweetness. The finish is earthy with lingering citrus.
The Bottom Line
Manchester Gin FAC51 earns a 7 — a gin that captures a cultural moment. The acid house citrus and dandelion-burdock Mancunian reference are not just marketing; they create genuine flavour. Peter Hook's involvement adds authenticity. Best in a G&T that channels the energy of a Haçienda night. At £33, Manchester's most iconic nightclub in a bottle.
