First Impressions
Scapegrace Black is the world's first naturally black gin. The dramatic smoky slate colour comes from a combination of butterfly pea flower, sweet potato, saffron and aronia berry — all pH-sensitive natural ingredients. Add tonic water (or any acid) and the colour transforms to a deep plum. It is spectacle with substance.
Tasting
The nose is resinous with juniper and dry earthy notes, with slight tropical sweetness swooping in. On the palate, full-bodied florality with a menthol-like crispiness — naturally chilling with balanced citrus freshness, spice, candied sweet potato and pineapple. The finish is warming and pleasant with lingering tropical sweetness.
The Bottom Line
Scapegrace Black earns a 7 — the colour-changing theatrics could easily be gimmick, but the liquid underneath has genuine character. The tropical notes from pineapple and sweet potato are unexpected and work well, though some may wish for more juniper backbone. Best served over ice with tonic to watch the transformation from black to plum.
