First Impressions
Tanqueray Malacca is one of the most legendary limited editions in gin history — originally released in the 1990s, discontinued, mourned, and then reborn due to popular demand. Named after the Straits of Malacca, the historic spice trade route, it is a sweeter, spicier, more citrus-forward version of Tanqueray that softens the London Dry austerity with baking spice and creamy warmth. Available in 1-litre bottles.
Tasting
The nose is zesty with lime and grapefruit, alongside rich intense spices and allspice with lemon curd. On the palate, robust and smooth with citrus up front, baking spice in the middle — less juniper than the London Dry, more citrus and sweet berry with herbs and coriander. The finish is the revelation: long and creamy with crème anglaise — warm vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and clove with a touch of juniper at the close.
The Bottom Line
Tanqueray Malacca earns a 7.5 for reviving a gin that fans demanded back. The sweeter, spicier profile is quite different from the London Dry, and the crème anglaise finish is genuinely memorable. At around £45 for a litre, the legendary status and limited availability justify the premium. The gin that came back from the dead.
