First Impressions
Ukiyo — meaning 'floating world' in Japanese, referring to the hedonistic pleasure culture of Edo-period Tokyo — produces this gin in Chiba, east of Tokyo, using five distinctly Japanese botanicals alongside seven traditional gin ingredients. The result is a gin that bridges East and West with genuine cultural authenticity: yuzu and sakura are not merely added for exoticism but are integral to the gin's identity.
The Distillery
Ukiyo Spirits distils in Chiba using traditional copper pot stills. The five Japanese botanicals — yuzu peel, mikan (mandarin) peel, sakura (cherry blossom) flower, sakura leaf, and sansho pepper — join seven traditional botanicals: juniper, pepper, coriander, angelica root, lemon peel, cardamom, and rosemary. The yuzu provides the primary citrus character — brighter and more complex than lemon — while the sansho pepper adds a distinctive numbing heat.
Tasting
The nose carries citrus fruits on what feels like a sea breeze — the yuzu and mikan creating a zesty, distinctly Japanese citrus character alongside delicate floral notes from the sakura.
On the palate, there is an explosion of zesty flavours — the characteristic yuzu unmistakable, with peppermint oil adding cooling freshness and cardamom and spice providing a warming backdrop. Juniper is beautifully balanced, and there is a subtle umami undertone that is genuinely reminiscent of Tokyo's sophisticated culinary scene. The sansho pepper contributes its distinctive numbing heat.
The finish is clean and crisp, with a lingering whisper of spice and refreshing zestiness.
How to Drink It
In a Japanese-style G&T — highball glass, plenty of ice, premium tonic, and a thin slice of yuzu or grapefruit. Also excellent in a Vesper Martini, where the Japanese botanicals add an exotic dimension.
The Bottom Line
Ukiyo Tokyo Dry earns a 7.5 for bringing genuine Japanese botanical authenticity to gin. The five Japanese ingredients — especially yuzu and sansho pepper — create a flavour profile distinct from European gins, and the 'floating world' concept is realised in a spirit of genuine sophistication. At around £30, the Japanese production and authentic botanicals represent excellent value. Tokyo in a glass.
