First Impressions
Ungava — named for the vast peninsula in northern Quebec — is made with six rare botanicals from Canada's sub-Arctic tundra: Labrador tea, cloudberry, wild rose hip, crowberry, Nordic juniper, and an Arctic blend. These botanicals turn the gin a striking natural yellow — no added colour. Produced by Domaine Pinnacle in Quebec, this is the only gin in the world made from genuine Arctic tundra plants.
Tasting
Six Arctic tundra botanicals. The nose is herbal and floral — Labrador tea's distinctive aromatic with cloudberry sweetness. On the palate at 43.1%, herbal and slightly sweet: Labrador tea's character dominates, cloudberry adds tart fruit, wild rose hip provides floral sweetness. The finish is herbal and clean with Labrador tea lingering.
The Bottom Line
Ungava earns a 7 — the Arctic tundra botanicals create a gin that genuinely tastes of nowhere else on Earth. The natural yellow colour is a visual statement of provenance. Labrador tea is the star: a botanical available only in the sub-Arctic. Best in a G&T with light tonic and a twist of lemon. At £28, Canada's frozen wilderness in a strikingly yellow bottle.
